In 2006 Stallion AI Services invested in a frozen semen storage and distribution unit alongside the existing semen collection facilities. We are able to store semen regardless of where it was collected and, provided it has the appopriate paperwork, are able to distribute it worldwide from Twemlows Hall.
Storage
If frozen semen is to be as good when thawed as it was when frozen it is vital to have quality storage and reliable backup for supplies of liquid nitrogen. For the latter we have a unique arrangement with CryoServe and Genus who have a bulk storage facility on site. We have also invested in top of the range MVE storage tanks which store semen at -196°C with seperate storage for different market requirements. The tanks are inspected three times a week and topped up regularly to ensure there is no risk of the nitrogen levels dropping below a required level.
The storage unit is divided into two rooms, one for domestic and one for international. This allows us to keep any semen that qualifies for export seperate from the semen that can only be shipped around the UK and therefore not affect its health status. All semen arriving at the centre must be accompanied by the necessary health papers.
Owners are billed on a six monthly basis, by dose rather than by stallion. This means that if an owner has more than one stallion's semen all the doses are counted together making it more cost effective for the owner.
Distribution
The frozen semen is shipped in nitrogen dry containers which have a holding time, if they are shipped correctly of up to 14 days. These containers can also be hired to clients to ship semen that is not held with us. We use an overnight delivery service so that the semen arrives the following day within the UK. Please contact us for delivery times and prices for international shipments.
You as an owner can rest assured that we will not release any of your frozen semen without your written confirmation. This can be sent to us by fax, email or post. Please download or print the 'Semen Distribution Request Form' which can be found in the left hand margin of this page.
It is essential that we receive written authorisation from you to avoid confusion between our records and your own. It also prevents mix-ups in shipping addresses.
Please allow us as much notice as possible for shipping instructions. One advantage of using frozen semen is that it can be stored at the stud or veterinary practice where the mare is going to be inseminated in advance of the mare needing it, provided they have the facilities to keep frozen semen. If the semen is to be exported we will need a minimum of two weeks to arrange the export health papers.
